They represent the \ncrowning achievement of the Rinpa school — Japan's \nmost influential decorative painting tradition.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸\n\nFūjin — the God of Wind — tears across a field of \npure gold, his wind bag billowing open above him, \ngreen body twisting with the force of his own \npower. His expression is neither cruel nor kind. \nHe simply is the storm.\n\nKōrin painted this screen around 1710, after \nencountering Tawaraya Sōtatsu's original masterpiece \nat Myōkō-ji Temple in Kyoto — a painting so powerful \nit had to be faithfully reproduced. What Kōrin added \nwas not imitation but dialogue: his version is bolder, \nmore dramatically composed, more purely decorative \nin the Rinpa tradition he helped define. As the \ncritic Yukio Mishima observed, the composition — \ngods placed at the very corners of the screens — \ncreates a tension that is almost unbearable.\n\nThe Raijin (Thunder God) companion canvas is \n available in our shop — together, Fūjin and \n Raijin recreate one of the most electrifying \n diptychs in 300 years of Japanese art history, \n and they were always meant to hang as one.\n\nThe gold leaf ground is not background. It is \natmosphere — suggesting not just space but the \nluminous void from which elemental forces emerge.\n\nThis is not mythology dressed up as decoration. \nThis is decoration elevated to the level of myth.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗲\n\nThree of Japan's greatest painters — Tawaraya Sōtatsu, \nOgata Kōrin, and Sakai Hōitsu — each painted their \nown version of Fūjin and Raijin across three \ncenturies. All three were displayed together for the \nfirst time in 75 years at the Kyoto National Museum \nin 2015. To own a reproduction of Kōrin's version \nis to hold a thread in the longest artistic \nconversation in Japanese history.\n\n━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻\n\nCurated and verified by F.
